I have a couple themes that do something a little similar – http://demo.appfinite.net/guru/
I used the WP Video Lightbox plugin – https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-video-lightbox/

Using a plugin like that is probably the easiest way. Other than that you’d have to create custom code to come up with something like that. The plugin should take care of it though.
