The site is :<a href=”http://dewanbros.com/”

I simply want to be able to add a header image that will not mess up theme features or spacing and I that I can do thru the header loader on wp. I see different default sizes in forum, but went with 1152 x 120 for ease of installation. If it should be another size, and will fit below criteria, please inform me and I will go that route.

I am willing to adjust logo header size if it eases installation and performance issues. Current install looks okay on web, not on iphone. I need it to be:

1. Mobile responsive and centered on all devices.
2. Easy to install.
3. Hopefully be able to click on header to redirect to home page too.

I have tried to find another thread to add this to but have struggled. Please share with me if I can do better next time, but help here ASAP as I am up a against a deadline.

Also open to paying a developer for a quick fix today. I apologize for my ignorance on coding.

Me too. I am after:

1) a simple install of a background image to the top of my website with the standard title and tag line can be added in the foreground, plus
2) is responsive to device screen size

A perfect example is at: http://www.pubble.co

Epik is almost there but this last bit for some reason seems to need a coder.

Can anyone advise please?

Bump. Yes, some customisation of the header would be great. At the moment I have a huge clickable area in my header with only one small image for my logo. The vast cliackable area seems redundant.

never-the-less, I am really liking this theme!

@corbettcapital I can definitely help you with this……no need to pay 馃槈 Do you have a link to your site with your logo already uploaded? If so I can tell you what you’ll need to do to get it to show up centered and responsive on mobile devices. Every site and logo is different so that’s why there isn’t a “one size fit all” for Genesis themes.

@sportydave Thanks! Glad you’re liking the theme 馃檪

Do you have a link to your site? I can tell you exactly what you’ll need to do to get it mobile ready…..assuming that’s what you’re looking to do right?

@sportydave Is this your site? – http://www.malleeblue.com/ I just happened to be on the SP forums just now and saw your username. If you take a look in your css (around line 1954 in your css) you’ll see this –

.header-image .site-title a {
float: left;
min-height: 164px;
width: 100%;
}

Change the width to around 360px (since that’s the size of your logo).

If this isn’t the site you’re referring to just let me know…..although it should be the same result either way.

Let me know if this helps.

Wes,

Thanks so much. I am new to Genesis and keep expecting things to be harder than they are. This is too easy! Thanks again.

Yes, Mallee Blue is my site – and yes, that’s your theme! I have the pressure now of doing your theme justice by running a decent site with it!

I will try your suggestion – and I assume that changing a “%” to a “px” is OK and won’t affect the responsive layout?

Usually in most cases you should use percentages when dealing with responsive css (and you probably still could)….but in this situation since it’s only 360px it will still show up fine since 360px should fit most mobile screens. There are other ways we could do it, but this is the easiest way for this case.

Thanks Wes. It worked. If you know of a more responsive way let me know the formula for calculating the correct percentage – otherwise, it all looks good.

Is there any way of utulising (via a widget or some other means) the large empty space on the right of the header area (above the search)?

Yes you can add some content, menu, search or whatever you want inside of the “Header Right” widget area and it will show up on the right side. In the demo – http://demo.appfinite.net/epik/ I’m actually using a “Custom Menu” widget inside of the “Header Right” widget area. You can add anything in it’s place if you wanted to.

I must be blind, sorry Wes. Of course the widget is already there. Thanks for the link to the Demo, I will take a look.

Wes,

I see your demo header is much narrower than the default (mine) How can I narrow my header, is it possible?

If you’re referring to the height, that’s because you have the Primary Nav and the Search section active right under the logo. And as you can see on the demo I have just the logo and header widget area (which are on the same line)…..plus the logo on the demo is smaller so it doesn’t take up as much space. You could add a custom menu widget like I mentioned above and that would reduce the height some.

Thank you Wes, I am trying various ideas to get the best fit so what you will see at: http://test.melodypods.com/ may not be the best option. The last thing I did was to try to replicate your demo with a narrow menu bar with a small site name to the left with the main image below it tight with no spacing so this doesnt use the logo but if that is a better way because it enables text to float above the image that would be even better.

Image will require improving since it is too small for laptop screens right now. Is there an optimum size?

Thanks

Wes,

I want to put in a header logo that 250x72px but the image tool in the Header editor wants to crop it. How can I put a logo that size in my header? Do I need to make css changes? I tried changing the css to this but it still wants to crop my logo.

.header-image .site-title a {
float: left;
min-height: 72px;
width: 250px;
}

@sportydave first you’ll need to adjust the header/logo size in your functions.php file. The code will look something similar to this –

//* Add support for custom header
add_theme_support( 'custom-header', array(
'width'           => 360,
'height'          => 70,
'header-selector' => '.site-title a',
'header-text'     => false,
) );

It may be a bit different, but you’ll see the width and height for a custom header. Find out the exact size of your image and add it in there, then once you upload your image you won’t have to crop it.

I would prefer to enter a full screen image in the logo setting so that I can then use the existing system to add text and menu overlays.

Hi Wes, I’ve tried the above code:

//* Add support for custom header as instructed by Wes adds code for my header logo dimensions */
add_theme_support( ‘custom-header’, array(
‘width’ => 475,
‘height’ => 105,
‘header-selector’ => ‘.site-title a’,
‘header-text’ => false,
) );

but get blank screens when trying to select an image (before I get to the crop or not option). If I remove the code I get back to the usual size.
Is there something missing?

Thanks

You actually don’t have to add that code in your functions file, it should already be there. The only thing you’d be doing is changing the width and height to match the exact size of your image, then you’ll be able to upload without cropping.

Hi Wes, thanks for the clarification. I have changed this detail in the functions.php of the epik child theme to:

// Add support for custom header
add_theme_support( ‘genesis-custom-header’, array(
‘width’ => 475,
‘height’ => 105
) );

but I get blank pages when I try to upload an image that size, so it fails before I get to the crop option (although the image I am trying to upload is exactly 475×105.

Is this size just too much for the layout ?

I just logged in and tried to upload an image and I saw the blank screen that you were talking about. Unfortunately I have no idea what is causing that, I’ve never seen that happen before.

I did notice that your WordPress installation needs to be updated….I’m not sure if that has anything to do with it or not, but I would recommend updating it to see if it helps since the header uploader is a WordPress feature. I would have done it for you, but I didn’t want to make any changes without permission. So go ahead and click update and try uploading again and let me know if that helps.

If it doesn’t help, then I would need to know what changes you made to your functions file to see if there is anything added that is conflicting with anything. An FTP login would be best in this situation just in case there is a php error.
