We’ve used Envira Gallery for four of our websites. I used to use Nextgen but it had problems..big issues (unrelated to the theme)..you can read up on the reviews.

Envira has a free and a paid version. I love it, as I can do slide shows, galleries, or masonry presentations. Check it out. I got the Full with unlimited lifetime…and since I am using it on several sites, the customers paid for it. It has a lot of “add on” features.

They have a .css add on as well to let you customize each gallery.

I found it to be easy to use, and quite stable. I had one issue with the “deep linking” add on, and their support was almost immediate.
