What is the maximum image size for pages and posts in the Aspire theme? Not the front page hero images, just pages and posts? I was told by StudioPress that it’s only 700px, assuming that I use a sidebar widget. But what if I decide on a full width layout or include an image gallery?

The reason for all these questions is to try to determine “the best” image size to use with this particular theme. I have to process a LOT of images and I’d rather do it just once. 🙂

      Thanks!

There is no “maximum” image size. It’s pretty much whatever your server can handle in order to load the image speedwise (we wouldn’t know what that would be). A full width image will show up at a different size for different users and their browsers. Just start with the default size and go larger if you want or feel you need to. There’s no set rule for any theme.

Thanks Eric. There seems to be a lot of variables at play with images. For example, it’s my understanding that Retina displays require double the amount of pixels, which basically means twice the image size.

So, assuming the maximum image size for a page or post is 700px for the Aspire theme, it would probably make sense to create images that 1400px wide. However, I personally think 1200px is probably fine.

But what I don’t know is what happens if I scale a 1200px image down within WordPress to say 800px. I’m assuming that the number of pixels is reduced accordingly, but how does that affect Retina displays?

The only way to know that for sure is to just try it out and test it on your phone or retina device. Then you can see if the size makes a difference or not. Have you already tested this?

Not yet. I think that in order to enable a Retina image you either need a Javascript app or a plugin. Here’s one I’m considering: https://meowapps.com/wp-retina-2x/
