      I am having an issue with the background image – it is being stretched or ‘squashed’ depending on the size of window, rather than being responsive.

      I am editing the image at Appearance>Themes>Manage Themes>background

      and the settings that I have on the image are:

      position:left
      repeat:no repeat
      attachment:fixed

      Am I editing in the right place?

        If you take a look at the Readme file in your theme, their should be a link to a plugin that handles this better.  I believe its this one – http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/simple-full-screen-background-image/
