In terms of physical size (i.e. pixels w x h), is there a best size to use when uploading images to a WordPress website? I’m not talking about hero images, which will vary depending on the theme, I’m referring to images that may be used throughout the site in pages or posts, some of which will be full width of the page or may have a sidebar.

Also, how does WordPress calculate the various default image sizes (full, large, medium, thumbnail)?

The image size depends where you are going to use it. You can use a larger (double) size image and set the size to 1/2 for Retina.

Most of my website images are run thru Photoshop and compressed (the “save for web”)..and then uploaded. A substantial saving in load time and file size.

Most computer monitor displays work well showing normal compressed images. I have tried both: very high quality uncompressed vs. edited compressed. Image quality was very acceptable for viewing at the lower size (file size)…and the load time was substantially improved. Very large files can really slow down your site..and make folks click away.

Lots of Google stuff on images and so on as it affects your site content and user experiences.

Thanks Andy. I guess what I’m asking is, “is there a best or standard size to use” for most images? For example, according to StatCounter, the most popular screen sizes are:

          1. 360×640
          2. 1366×768
          3. 1920×1080

If we use this example, wouldn’t it mean that, (if I want my images to look great a full size) I should upload at least a 1920 x 1080 image? My understanding is WordPress will allow me to select a smaller version of the same image (full size, large, medium, thumbnail).
