I would like to have a content / sidebar layout on my home page with a widget area on the left for posts and a widget area on the right for a sidebar. Can anyone here suggest the best approach to achieve this? I’m new to working with WordPress, Genesis and web design. I would appreciate and could use a little guidance. Thanks in advance.

Take a look at your home.php file so you can see how its setup.  This is the file you’ll be adding and removing the things you need.

You can take a look here – http://www.studiopress.com/tutorials to learn how hooks, filters, actions, etc work.  If you’re unable to figure it out from looking at the home file or the tutorial section, then I would recommend hiring a developer to create a custom homepage for you.

I have looked at the Optimal theme home.php intensely and am concerned with how any changes might effect how the theme displays on a mobile device, given that I’ve noticed similar code in the functions.php referencing all the registered widgets for the home page. Not to mention, I would need to change some code in the style.css as well? I will research this further for the rest of the night, I appreciate your help and the links. However, seeing that it’s your theme, would you be interested in helping me with this mod? How much could a home page mod cost if your not up to it?
Thanks again, I appreciate you taking time out of your day to respond!

Yes the widget code you saw in the functions file is what registers the widget areas to exist, and the location of those widgets on the home page are determined by the position they’re located in on the home.php file…..and the css as well.  So if you enabled or created new areas, you would have to either edit the existing css or add css in order for it to maintain the responsiveness.

My rate is currently $100 an hour for custom modifications.  Something like this shouldn’t take any longer than an hour for sure.   I’m guessing other developers would charge around the same.  Before you hire anyone, take a look at some of those tutorials to see if you can figure it out.
