      I would like to customize css and functions.php in a way that will not be overwritten if the theme is updated. Can you please advise? Thanks.

        Yes you can do this by creating custom files and adding them to your theme or inside a Custom Folder. Then you can link to those files by importing them in your style.css and functions files. Here is an example of how you can do that – http://bit.ly/1rBUNAW
