WOW what a mouthful! I dont know how else to put it – but there it is…

My client has a product which has multiple applications which we made into categories… They are Auto, Home, Office and Nautical – My client would like the individual products (lets say one is called “Cleaner” for instance) to display DIFFERENT featured images depending on the category based portfolio page that is loaded. This will keep us from having a separate page for each category and as such duplicate pages. (I tried to sell the idea on ONE image to represent all 4 and that isnt working) – So heres how they want it to work…

These all link to the SAME CLEANER PAGE and pull their intro from it.

So when displaying the Auto Portfolio Page – the cleaner page would show a car.
When displaying the Home Portfolio Page – the cleaner page would show a house.
So when displaying the Work Portfolio Page – the cleaner page would show a Business.
So when displaying the Nautical Portfolio Page – the cleaner page would show a Boat.

Have a rummage on the site and let me know if you have any ideas…

      Thanks for having a look!

Why not just make 4 similar pages. Don’t duplicate the content exactly but alter it enough.

Scott – that is an option we considered but between the two main product lines it turns out to br a total of 72 pages needed vs 28 pages if we are able to sort them by wordpress category and code…

Any one have any ideas abouT this? The client FINALLY realized that they either need more generic representational images or to eliminate them completely but i would still like to know if there was a way to have the thumbnail in the portfolio page be associated with a category and not necessarily the page – but that doesnt sound like its possible or even practical to try…

So one page is in 4 categories and therefor shows up on 4 portfolio pages… It would need 4 different featured images, and the code on the portfolio page for CAT1 would need to know that Feat image 1 is for CAT1 and display that image for the page that is thumbnailed.

Yea – better they just do sumpthin different with the images that go though all this rigamarole…

@lenz It would be much easier to use a plugin for something like this. The Portfolio that comes with these themes aren’t really designed to do anything complex. I like to keep them basic to avoid making the Theme too bloated.

I’d try searching wordpress.org or codecanyon if you need something with more features.

Wes – I agree – I had to ask because my client just doesn’t want to understand why it doesn’t work the way they want it to – so I had to ask. I looked around and for the life of me could not find a standalone or hack for this. It kinda makes sense and i am sure someone wanted something like this for their site before my client BUT I still don’t see any easy way to do it.

Believe it or not the short term solution is to delete the featured and attached image associations and only have images in the actual pages… Because it doesn’t sort in an obscure and confusing way – they dump the images from all the portfolio indexes… Oh well.

Thanks again for taking the time Wes! Cheers!

I’m actually looking for a free Portfolio plugin with decent features to start using in some of the future Theme Demos. I’ll let you know if I come across anything.
