I’m working my way around the Epik Theme and am a relative beginner on WordPress.

I’m trying to add both the “Welcome Wide Widget” and the “Welcome Feature 1” and “2” and “3” to my home page. I’ve read through the tutorial that Wes put together here:

      https://appfinite.com/topic/how-to-add-left-and-right-content-for-the-epik-theme-widgets/

All that said, I’m still a bit confused. For example, I thought Widgets were only available on side bars, so I’m not really clear on how to add left and right content for Epik theme widgets.

Can someone dumb this down just a tiny bit so that you explain step-by-step how to do the widgets on a regular, full-width (without side bars) home page?

I don’t need a full dissertation, just simple, step-by-step instructions.

      Thanks!

Update — I think I figured out where the widgets are and how the code would be dropped into the widgets, but now my questions is “How does the widget know where to show up on my home page?” In other words, if I drop some of the code into the widgets, won’t that show up on all the pages? Or is it just designed to show up on the Home page?

        Thanks.

Yes the homepage widgets only show up on the homepage. They work just like widgets that show up on the sidebar (just like any other theme) except these particular widgets show up on the homepage only.

Each home widget has a specific place that it shows up on the homepage. They all show up in order, with their own specific colors. Here is a guide that Wes made to show exactly where each which widget is located – https://appfinite.com/topic/epik-widgets-guide/

So once you add a widget into any of the widget areas, then that widget and that widget section will show up on the homepage. Keep in mind, ONLY that widget and the section it is located in will show up if you add something inside of it. So if you don’t add anything in the other widget areas, then they won’t show up….only the widget areas that you are using will show up. So that means you have full control over which widget section gets added on your homepage. The entire homepage is “Plug and Play“.

Example, if you only want the Slider widget area, and the Welcome widget area to show up then you should only add widget/content inside of those widget areas and only they will show up on your homepage.

You probably already figured this out, but I thought I’d post this just in case anyone else was curious.

          Hope this helps.

            Hi Kronos —

Thanks for your answer to my question above. Much appreciated.

Follow-up question — I’ve loaded some content into the home page of my blog which uses the Epik theme. That means when I go in and use the widgets as suggested, I lose all of the content previously included.

You can see what I mean here:
            http://www.60SecondCommunications.com

Is there a way around that? In other words, can I keep the content that’s in there, then add some additional content to one of he widgets to have the widget show up below the existing content?

            Thanks,
            Jamie

Yes it’s possible but you would have to make customizations to your home.php file since it’s basically a template. I’m not sure exactly how to do it as it would take some time coming up with some code to create this, but I would do a Google search to see if anything out there pops up. There are usually some tutorials out there that already have the work done.

If you don’t find anything, you could try and experiment combining your blog template file with the home.php (copy the blog template into your child theme folder). If you’re not familiar with php, then I wouldn’t do this, as it will require some basic knowledge/understanding of how it works.

The easiest way I can think of is to use the Genesis Featured Posts widget, which you can add into one of the widget areas. That widget adds the posts to your homepage (or any page) without any code.

                Hi Kronos —

Thanks for your follow-up. It sounds like something that’s a bit beyond my expertise and would also be time-consuming, so I’m going to stick with what I have.

Thank you for your follow-up. I appreciate it.
