Hi, I need my site to run on two different languages. I have the plugin WMPL and have set up the menu fine, but I cannot figure out how I would change the home page widgets etc.. to work for two different languages, same with the slider.
Sorry if this is obvious but I just can’t get my head around it. Any help appreciated.
P.s I absolutely LOVE the theme it definitely is ‘epik’ 😉April 20, 2013 at 10:47 am #4035
I guess I am wondering how do you have two homepages when the home page is a .php and created with widgets? Is there any way to duplicate this for a second language? What is the easiest way to do this. Thanks!April 20, 2013 at 1:09 pm #4042
I’m not really an expert with Multilingual sites, but if all you need to do is create a separate home file….you could just copy the existing home.php file and rename it to “home2” (for example) and turn it into a Page Template. Then create a “Page” and select the page template.
Now, this will still show your home widgets, so you could either add the same widgets and rename them (hard way) or you could use a plugin that will let you show different widget content on certain pages (much easier way). You can use a plugin like – http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/custom-sidebars/ or – http://www.studiopress.com/plugins/simple-sidebars which will allow you to add and display different widget content for this page specifically.

To turn you home.php file into a page template, add this under the first php at the top –
// Template Name: Home
This will allow you to use this as a page template. Remember to copy and rename the file.

Ok these instructions are great, I have managed to copy the home.php and made it into a template and everything seems to be working a treat, but now I am stuck on changing the widgets. I downloaded the simple sidebars plugin but am at a loss of where to go from here. I cannot figure out how to display different widget content for this page specifically..?April 21, 2013 at 9:10 am #4060
The Genesis simple sidebars plugin only seems to let you work with the primary and secondary sidebar so not sure how the widgets would show up in the correct place using this?April 21, 2013 at 9:20 am #4061
Also I am not sure how this would work whilst keeping the settings of each widget ie, the gray/white/color boxes? Maybe adding the same widgets and renaming the would be easier? But then how would you edit them so they knew which home page to appear on?April 21, 2013 at 12:30 pm #4064
Have you tried the first plugin? – http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/custom-sidebars/ I actually like this one better. I think it would be easier to use.
Give that plugin a try instead and let me know if you can’t figure it out.

Hi Eric, that plugin does seem to be better but I am still running into problems. With WPML I am using the extension .org/en for the English version of my site. When using the plugin org./en is recognized as the English homepage and it wont let me create a new page and assign it this extension it will only let me have .org/en/home for example. So am feeling a bit stuck. I have used this plugin with another theme but it is the way that the homepage is built with this theme that is causing the issues.
Not really sure where to go from here?April 21, 2013 at 8:51 pm #4070
I don’t really know what to do since I haven’t used the plugin before, but I’ll continue and try to help as much as I can. The way the homepage is setup is based on WordPress standards. Adding a home.php file will automatically be recognized as the home page. Maybe you could just create two page templates (or just create 2 pages and use the same template twice) and assign different sidebar content to each of the 2 homepages?
See if that will work, and let me know…..Other than that, I’m not sure what else we could do. You would probably have to contact the plugin developer or use the plugin’s forum to see if they have any suggestions for Genesis child themes.

Hi Eric, thanks so much for all your help I really appreciate it. WMPL did say that they were compatible with Genesis so there must be a way to get around this (there customer support sucks though). I have renamed the home.php now and made it a template, created two pages and used the same template twice, but I still don’t understand how to use the custom sidebars plugin properly.
I have downloaded the plugin but have no idea what to do next. I have played around with it but not sure how it really works and there isn’t much documentation on using it.
Is there any chance you could advise me on what what to do with this plugin. The home page template I have created currently is featuring all the widgets that I have added code for in the widgets menu, when I make edits here it changes on both homepages and I don’t understand how to make unique changes here that would work for two individual pages?
Maybe I need to duplicate the widgets and also make a new template for the second homepage. Is this possible? How would I go about doing that?
Thanks!April 25, 2013 at 10:55 pm #4281scoobyCustomer
I think he’s trying to say that you can use the plugin to create multiple sidebars with the same template on multiple pages. I haven’t used the WPML plugin, but I have used the sidebar plugin and it definitely works for something like this. I don’t think you need to make a new template, just use the same one and create multiple sidebars/widgets with the sidebar plugin.
