Hi, I’m a newbie to installing a child theme however as a first step I renamed the sample page provided and subsequently the pre-defined widgets for the home page dont appear now on that page as previously. I have the page I want as home page designated as the home page in the theme settings and the default template selected. I am wondering what exactly ties a page to using the child themes home.php code and subsequently displaying the home page widgets?

I’m a little confused on what you’re asking since you mentioned a “sample” page?

Also, WordPress automatically detects home.php as the front page, so you don’t need to specify a homepage in your Reading Settings. So in Settings > Reading make sure and leave the “Front Page displays” as “Your Latest Posts”. You also won’t need to create a page called “home” either since the homepage will be activated automatically once you add widgets to the home widget areas. If you don’t have any content inside your widgets then it will show your blog by default.

As you suspected Wes I had assigned a static home page in Settings>Reading so that was mucking it up!

          Thanks heaps.
