Setting up a new client with Adept theme. Should I go with Gen 2.0 or 1.9 or does it matter?

For now, you can still use the old version of the theme since it will still work with Genesis 2.0. But I’m adding some last minute adjustments to a new HTML5 version which will either be released late tonight or tomorrow.

Well, I installed the current Adept with Gen 2.0 and the only thing that didn’t seem to work is for it to show your readme.txt file on the Gen Theme Options page. Not sure that is a Gen 2.0 issue or an Adpet issue. Otherwise everything else seems to work OK… but I’ve not tried the portfolio. Here is the work-in-progress site http://brandylanepublishers.com/wp/ if interested.

The Read Me doesn’t work for me either, even when using an SP theme. So I guess they either removed the function to view from the WP admin, or there is a bug. We’ll see.

When I get done with the theme, you should be able to just swap it out and everything will stay in place (widget content). There are a few design changes that were made, but if you want to add any of them back through css it shouldn’t be an issue.

    Design changes? Like what?

Your current Readme says that there are 5 homepage middle area boxes, but there are only 4 widget areas so I figured it must be a typo.

Please document the design changes if you can.

I put all my CSS in a custom.css. But I put it in the theme folder… so that was probably not the best idea. I probably should move it up to WP-Content so that an upgrade to the theme won’t clobber it. Either that, or save it somewhere, do the upgrade… and move it back in. (I’m assuming that a theme upgrade replaces the current folder… everything in it.)

These will be subtle/minor design changes. Everything will be mostly the same though. Just added a few enhancements. I hope to be able to show some of the differences soon…..but again, it won’t be anything drastic as far as the design goes.

    Also, I have a changelog I plan to update here – http://appfinite.com/changelog/

Yes everything will be different since the Genesis 2.0 Markup is different than the old. So definitely backup and save your work. If you’ve already made a lot of changes then it would be best to manually update/convert your theme to HTML5. Here are some resources -http://www.studiopress.com/news/genesis-2-0-resources.htm

This theme was completely redeveloped based on Genesis 2.0 from scratch. So think of this as a brand new theme with brand new code on the backend….but the design of it is still the same, just enhanced in a few areas.

    Hi Wes,
Yup, I’ve been following these changes closely, and the README has been pulled out for 2.0. More on that stuff here.

Why this would happen is beyond me. I answer questions on the SP forum, and some questions would have been avoided altogether if people would have read that. Now that’s out. Gary’s not even a Studiopress employee, but thanks to him, some details emerge. The SP team are pretty silent about release details, changelogs, prices, etc. I don’t know if they’re understaffed or what. So I’m left to do my own code compares, or catch something on Twitter.

On a happier note, when I get some time between tasks, I will be sporting Epik on my own homepage, so I’m looking forward to that!

Thanks for the link Dave, I had no idea they removed it.

Yes Gary is awesome! I actually just hired him to help out with an issue I couldn’t figure out with the portfolio.

Definitely looking forward to see what you come up with!

    Wes,
I converted my own homepage to Epik 1.3 with Genesis 2.0 yesterday. It was the easiest time I’ve ever had changing the theme there. My own homepage is largely a landing page now, not too complex. But with so many fancy widgets available, I was expecting to do some careful organizing/thinking. Instead, things just fell into place. I did a few moves of items to different widgets. My responsive Portfolio Slider looked good right away. I added 2, count ’em 2 lines of CSS, and I was good to go! I played with all the color options, and I liked several, but went back to the default for now, which I think really looks great.

I’m extremely pleased!! I look forward to using this theme elsewhere too, on more complex sites. davidchu.net

    Thanks!! Dave

Was there an update of Optimal? I didn’t know. I assume it has a new CSS… meaning I better be darn careful when I update to make sure I save a copy of the old one.

Maybe this is a good time to say that people should be using a “custom.css” and not the CSS of their theme… in case of updates. With Genesis it is easy to use a custom.css by just putting the link HTML in the “before header” box in the Gen Theme Options screen.

We do this for our clients. I guess we should do it for our own site now!!! 🙂

    @dan You’re Welcome!

    @dev77
Yes there was a major update. Basically it’s a new, completely redeveloped theme designed for Genesis 2.0/HTML5. So yes definitely backup your old files just in case. I wrote some basic info here about what you should do – http://appfinite.com/topic/optimal-1-3-for-genesis-2-0-html5-is-now-available/

Yeah I always recommend separating custom css as well. I personally think it’s much easier to manage.

    Let me ask two questions.

    1. We have a couple of hundred lines of CSS overrides to various classes and ID. Since some of the classes (I’m not sure yet which ones) were changed in Gen 2, is there any backward compatibility to stndard things like #header {…} overrides?

    2. There is nothing (today) that we need Gen 2 for. However we would like to upgrade. Will old Optimal work the same with Gen 2 as it does with Gen 1? And out of curiousity, will new Optimal work with Gen 1 or does it require Gen 2 (I assume it does.)

    Thanks.

Sorry for the late reply I’m currently busy working on updates and other projects for the site at the moment….which is why I haven’t been on the forums lately (in case anyone is wondering).

    1. Your theme will still work with Genesis 2.0, you just need to make sure HTML5 is NOT enabled. By default it won’t be if you’re using an older theme. So you’ll still be able to use it as you can see here from the Developer himself – http://www.nathanrice.net/blog/genesis-loop-hooks/

“Note: if you’re using Genesis without HTML5 activated, all the old hooks and markup work as before. Genesis 2.0 is 100% backward compatible.”

Also check his comment on backward compatibility – http://www.nathanrice.net/blog/genesis-loop-hooks/#comment-2076

“At some point, not sure when, we’ll remove the backward compatibility and only offer auto-updates to people who are running a theme that supports HTML5. It’s just the way it has to be … we can’t litter the Genesis source code with conditionals for infinite backward compatibility forever. But before we do that, we’ll update all the StudioPress themes to work with HTML5, and will probably maintain the 2.0.x branch for a year or so with security updates, etc., so you’re not caught with an insecure version of Genesis.”

    2. The old version should still work with Genesis 2.0. The new version of Optimal will only work with Genesis 2.0. There’s no reason to create a new version that works for an older version of the Genesis Framework since no one will be or should be using the old version of Genesis. It’s always recommended to use the latest version of Genesis even if you’re using an older child theme for security and many other reasons…..you probably already know this, but I’m sure others may be curious.

I think I get it now. But I still have 2 questions.

    I’ve updated to Gen 2.0.

The old Optimal works just fine.

    Tell me about “new” Optimal.

If I update to the new Optimal, must I add the code (which is what?) to make Optimal into an HTML5 theme? And if I do that, do I have to change all my CSS?

OR, will the new Optimal work fine with Gen 2.0 without (HTML5) modification.

    Thanks.
