      Hi,

I am a newbie with Genesis, Epik and WordPress. Yesterday I have spent a lot of time playing around with the theme and managed to customize different things via the style.css file. Today I have been reading and it seems I have made a bad novice mistake and if the theme gets updated all my customization will be lost. Also I have done a small change to the function.php file (for the header logo dimensions) and defined a new theme color.

What would be the best way for me to fix this up, keep my customization changes while future proofing my website to support future updates?

      Thanks in advance.

You could create a custom css file and have it inside your theme, then link to it from the style.css file. The other way I’ve seen is to create a custom section in your css file and always keep a backup so when there is an update you just copy and paste it back in.

          Hi Eric,

First of all thanks for your response. As you know I am taking baby steps so please bare with me. In regards creating the custom css file, could I copy the entire source CSS file from the theme paste it into my own CSS file and then make the changes that I want? How do I link to it from the style.css? (sorry for the question, like a said this is all new to me 🙂 ).

Now, with the custom section in the style.css can I simply add all the changes at the end of the file (meaning, beginning my custom section from the last line of the style.css)? Then with a new update I just have to paste all my CSS to the end of the new style.css.

          Thanks in advance!

Yes you can do that, I’ve seen others doing the exact same.

Thanks Eric! This is great news!

Will this (adding custom CSS to the bottom of the file) have an impact in the website performance?

              Thanks once again!

No it’s still apart of the same file, so it would make no difference.
