I honestly don’t know whether this is a theme issue or an issue with the Genesis Slider. But the slider only started acting a little wonky since I switched to the gorgeous Ally theme (which I LOVE by the way – another wonderful theme from Appfinite!).

When you come to the website, the first time through the loop, each of the pictures in the slider show – however, after multiple times through, every other image kind of phones it in.

This particular website is http://www.genuinekentucky.com.  Thanks so much!  –  Joi Sigers

A little clarification – I want to display three featured posts (similar to the Demo) but to have one from my Blog category, one from my Portfolio category and a third from my News category (three separate post categories)

I’m not sure how to make it alphabetical.  If there is a WordPress function that can do it, then it should work with this since it is basically just your blog in a portfolio format.

I do know of this plugin – http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/post-types-order/ which allows you to control the order of your posts.

Ok, I see that it worked when making a page and it likewise worked for me when editing another static page. Is the <!–nextpage–> feature only for pages and not blog posts? That’s where I’m having trouble.

Its working – http://canudigitblog.com/sample-test/  Delete this page once you see it.

I clicked the “Kitchen Sink” button in your editor.

From what it sounds like, you could just use the blog itself.  This tutorial – https://appfinite.com/tutorials/how-to-create-multiple-portfolios/ would work for the blog and regular posts as well.  Just make sure you have the featured image enabled in your Genesis Theme Settings.

You could set up specific blog posts to show on certain pages (like the tutorial).  Otherwise you would need to edit the css of the portfolio posts to be full width.

Thats because this file wasn’t really built for what you’re trying to do.  It was originally designed to show the home widgets, or the blog if you dont have any widgets by default.  If you need anything beyond that, then the file would have to be customized in order to achieve what you’re looking for.

I usually offer the code if its something quick and easy, but somethings (like this) can take a while to customize/code.  Thats why I would recommend searching for tutorials, or hiring someone to develop a custom template for you.

Yes, when dealing with templates like this you would have to learn how to use the hooks, filters, etc.  I would recommend checking out the StudioPress tutorials – http://www.studiopress.com/tutorials  You could also search for some tutorials on third party blogs/sites on how to customize genesis templates.  I don’t know of any third party sites specifically, but I know there are a lot out there.

I’m a little confused on what you’re asking exactly, but I’ll try and explain what this portfolio is and  what it can do.

This particular portfolio is designed to be as simple as possible, think of it as just a blog that is redesigned to show in a portfolio thumbnail format. I didn’t want to make it too complex by adding too many features/code since heavy duty portfolios be done with plugins rather than themes.

With this particular portfolio you can either have all categories on one page, or you can have select categories show by excluding the category id’s you don’t want to appear in the Genesis Theme Settings, or you can have multiple portfolio items that show each category separately on each page.  Here are a couple tutorials on how to create multiple portfolios –  https://appfinite.com/tutorials/

Some users ask if its possible to have each portfolio item/post/thumbnail link to different categories that open up to show a portfolio of that specific category, and at this time its not unable to do this just yet.  However, as mentioned above, you can have multiple portfolio pages that show each category separately.

Again, this is pretty simple, so if you need something a little more complex, then I would recommend searching the WordPress plugin area.

Okay, I feel completely silly at this point.  I’ve tried everything I can think of and the background image is STILL not showing up on this theme.  I added the background image using APPEARANCE >BACKGROUND.  For the life of me I can’t find any background image at all in the CSS (sometimes designers put a sample in there).  The #wrap makes the whole background white, but would think the background would have been there or in the Body.

Please forgive me as I learning about the whole mobile ready aspect.

The portfolio and the prettyPhoto plugin slideshow included with this theme will only show the featured image.  I kept things simple when creating this part of the theme.  Its basically like a custom blog redesigned in a portfolio format.

If you’re looking for a more complex portfolio I would recommend searching the WordPress plugin section.

I’ve never seen that happen before.  Do you have the posts setup any certain kind of way?  Are they set to Public?

Any plugins active that could be interfering?  Have you tried deactivating them one by one?

Sometimes when there is a link that is typed in wrong it will redirect to the homepage, or a 404 page.  I copied the blog links and pasted them in the url area and it still redirected.  So something is either wrong with the links, or there is something else effecting them.

Thanks for your quick reply. I prefer not to create manual html links as I have 100s of pages – and this is why I am moving to wordpress 🙂
Plus, I can’t connect pages to categories, they are all sub-parent pages. Isn’t there a way to create a loop (not sure how to do this but started reading about this). If you look at the plugin can you see a way to create something in the stylesheet? Here is the wiki page: https://github.com/billerickson/display-posts-shortcode/wiki towards the bottom there are customization options and also include css info. I think this would be a great add to the template and it also allows to display blog posts, etc. by shortcode. I will definitely use this but I’m hoping to give this the same look and feel of the template.

You mentioned looking for a portfolio theme that can handle this – do you know of one? Do any other genesis child themes offer this?

Also, I see on my menu that there is a problem with the submenu and arrows not lining up . BTW, do you know of a good mega menu that opens horizontally across the screen? I have 100s of pages and need to find a way improve navigation.

                                        Thanks!!

I’m sure there is a way to do it, but I haven’t personally done this yet since the portfolio page is so simple.  Its basically just the blog, but redesigned with a few extras.  I would like to add more features in the near future, especially something like what you’re requesting.

Since the plugin was made by a Genesis Developer, I went ahead and gave it a try, but I’m still not sure how to implement the portfolio layout with this particular method.

Would it be too difficult to create a custom page with the Portfolio links that link to separate categories?  If so, I know this can be done since we can create multiple portfolio pages that show separate categories. (the tutorial on how to do this – https://appfinite.com/tutorials/)  This method would involve manually creating the html which links to the separate portfolio pages.  I can give you a head start if you’re interested in this method…..until I have a way to do it automatically in the theme settings.  Just let me know if you’re interested in this, otherwise I would recommend searching for a portfolio plugin that is designed to handle this.

Not sure on this, I don’t have IE8 (I’m a mac user), so I’m unable to see the issue.

You can style the home images separately from the blog post images by styling them like this – “.home .post-image”

With the code that was originally there, you were able to have unlimited posts on the front page. Maybe you can check your Genesis theme settings to make sure you don’t have the blog set to show 10 posts.

I’m not an expert when it comes to custom loops just yet and I don’t want to give you the wrong advice. Yes, just create a new page and select the portfolio template. Then create a custom field and enter query_args in the name field, and cat=1 (for example) in the value field. Replace 1 with the category ID that you want to use and it will show only the category that you added in the value field. I am planning to create a blog posts on how to do this pretty soon.

If you look at the sidebar you can see that the blogroll shows up fine, but if you look below there is a list of towns – which are a custom menu – and they are in a white font and are not stacked in a list. I can figure out the font – but the list CSS is stumping me.

When using most Genesis themes, the Reading Settings page should always have “Front page displays” set to “Your latest posts”. You don’t have to set the home or blog page here, its already setup for you.

Your home page will automatically show the home.php file within your theme.

For the blog, you simply create a page, name it Blog (or whatever you want) then select “Blog” from the template selector on the right of the page.

This is how most Genesis themes are setup, at least the ones with the home.php file already included.
